Angel Biscuits

A nice flaky biscuit that goes with just about anything. I was so delighted when I found this recipe; as I have tried many in the past and have not had very good success. So to my suprise these were just what I was looking for.

Ingredients
1 (1/4 ounce) package dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups butter milk (make your own with 2cups milk and 1 tablespoon white vinegar, let sit unti it curdles, about 10 minutes)
1/2 cup shortening.

Directions
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Mix all dry ingredients and combine with liquids.
Place in refrigerator until ready to use. Stores up to two weeks.
When ready to make:
Take out the amount you want to use and leave the rest in the refrigerator.
Roll out and shape into biscuits on a lightly floured surface or drop by the spoonful onto a lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes or until browned on top.

Makes approx. 48 biscuits

*Note: May make these up and keep batter covered in fridge for up to 2 weeks.

  2. These are a tad bit sweet for us. You might want to adjust the sugar. I also had to add extra flour as they were too sticky for me.

  3. Thanks for the tips! Do you think cutting the sugar in half would be enough or would you reduce it even more?

  4. Half would be just fine more than likely. I got curious and went looking in my other cookbooks. Each recipe is very similar to the one above except both call for 5 cups of flour. I guess they are suppose to be sweet, sweet. Give em a whirl and change them up how ever you like.

  5. Thank you for becoming a follower of Sweet Magnolias Farm. I think your blog is charming and I encourage you to keep going. You have the right ideas and it is interesting. We prefer to visit "real" farm blogs as opposed to decorating blogs. You appear to have the talent for sharing your thoughts and making it fun to read. I love the fresh veggies pic and of course who doesn't love biscuits. I would have liked to see pics of the rabbits and any other critters around the farm. How about some pics of that garden this spring in all its different stages. People have such an interest in food gardens these days as a way to suppliment their income. You could actually instuct on growing a garden as their are so many people that don't know how to begin or what to grow when. Google farm blogs and find ones you like and join so you can get known. I always check other followers [blogs] when I am visiting someones blogs. The blog world is so big its indescribable.
And one last comment. The sweet biscuits...Have you ever heard of the bar-b-que restaraunt...Lucilles....It is originally from the south. But now in several states. Check out their mouth-watering menu. To die for. You can google it. Anyway they are know for their biscuits which are brought to your table while you wait on your meal. They are a sweet biscuit with a sprinkle of sugar on top and they are served with honey butter and they are sooooooooooooooooooooo yummy. Don't know of anyone who isn't crazy for them. So this could be a sweet biscuit recipe. Just maybe a bit more southern style. I am going to try your recipe and will let you know how we like them.
Hope you keep your blog going and write often as it will get more followers the more content it has.
May God Bless, Abbey, Sweet Magnolias Farm
